Mohiniattom is the seductive dance of the temptress
(Mohini). Performed by women, it is lyrical to the extreme and sensuous
in its appeal.
Its technique and gesture language have much in common with Bharatanatyam
and Kathakali. However, it has a distinct character as a dance form. The
jerks and hard stamping footwork of
Bharatanatyam
gives way to smooth footwork, quicker movements striking poses and special
music. Its keynote feature is coquetry, combined with grace, delicacy and
passion.
The origin of the dance is not clear. It would have emerged fusion of parallel
streams of dance in the eastern and western regions of South India.
