BACK HOME Energy Profile of Kerala
A 50 paise surcharge was introduced for all categories of consumers
from August 28, 2002. In addition, the tariffs for domestic consumers
were increased by 43 to 137 per cent (including surcharge) , taking the average (domestic) to about Rs. 1.75 a unit.
These rates were lowered in October following public protests.
The October 2002 revision envisaged an overall increase of 20 per
cent over earlier (pre-August 10) rates excluding the surcharge. The
overall average tariff (all categories) rose to 2.68 a unit (including surcharge) following the
revision.
In subsequent years, the tariff is being determined by the State
Electricity Regulatory Commission constituted in Nov. 2002. The
Government reduced the tariff by 20 paise per unit for domestic and
commercial categories of customers in 2007, only to withdraw it later.
